Bayern Munich defeated Chelsea to take revenge for their defeat in the 2011-12 Champions League Final. This was a game which was more about the coaches going head to head rather than the teams with Pep Guardiola managing Bayern Munich and Jose Mourinho managing Chelsea. They resumed their rivalry from their days of being the managers of Sains top two rivals Barcelona and Real Madrid. The games versus the top two Spanish teams is known as the El Clasico and we did see a El-Clasico match when Bayern Munich and Chelsea played in the Super cup.
This was the first time that the Super Cup was played in Prague rather than the usual venue in Monaco. This was a one of the better Super Cups as two European Heavy weights were going each other. Usually one team is a considerably less popular team than the other as the second tier European competition ie Europa League is less glamourous and big teams dont take much interest in this competition as compared to the first tier Champions League.
The UEFA Super Cup is played between the teams who have won the two European Competitions in the previous season. Winner of the Europa League plays the winner of the Champions League. SO since Chelsea won the Europa League and Bayern Munich won the Champions League both teams went head to head. Bayern Munich put a second string squad for the league game and they drew their match as they wanted to rest key players. Similarly Chelsea drew with Manchester United in the league as they played safe and wanted to play well in the Super Cup as you can win a trophy by playing just one game.
Chelsea started the Super Cup well as they raced into a lead after Fernando Torres scored after 8 minutes. The impotent striker in the league is exceptional when he plays in European Competitions. Torres had scored 10 goals in 7 matches last season in Europe and continued his fine European form to make it 11 goals in 8 matches. But then just before half time the new European player of the year scored Frank Ribery to level the scoreline. The game ended at 1-1 but not before yet another Chelsea Player was shown a red card in an European match. Ramirez got his second yellow card 5 minutes from time to reduce Chelsea to 10 men.
But Eden Hazard scored in the first half of extra time to give a 10 men Chelsea a lead. And it seemed like Chelsea were going to lift the Super Cup when Javi Martinez popped up with a goal at the death to level the tie and send the tie into penalties. David Alaba, Toni Kroos, Philipp Lahm, Franck Ribéry and Xherdan Shaqiri all scored their penalties for Bayern Munich. David Luiz, Oscar, Frank Lampard, Ashley Cole converted Chelsea's penalties. But Romelu Lukkaku missed the decisive penalty and Bayerm Munich lifted the Super Cup and got the revenge for their defeat in the last Champions League Final.
