Athletico Madrid Win La Liga 2013-14

Finally a team other than Barcelona or Real Madrid has won the Spanish title. It has been almost a decade since another team has won. The credit should certainly go to Athletico Madrid Manager Diego Simeone who guided his team to the La Liga title after putting off Barcelona in the final game of the league. Barcelona needed to beat Athletico Madrid to snatch the league from Athletico Madrid's hand at the end of the season.

It was a tight title race this season for the Spanish League with the usual Barcelona and Real Madrid fighting out along with the ever growing Athletico Madrid side which has been really making big strides under
the management of Diego Simeone. Even after loosing their best player Radamel Falcao to Monaco they have managed to better their league position this season with Diego Costa being a relevation scoring goals for fun. He was under shadow of Radamel Falcao last season and after Falcao's departure to Monaco Costa has been exceptional. His goal scoring exploits have alerted top clubs with Chelsea being the front runners to sign him.

Athletico Madrid have been a rising team for the past few years now wining the europa league and performing well in the previous La Liga campaigns. Even after loosing big star names almost every season they have managed to challenge the top two clubs not only in the league but also in the world. They lost Fernando Torres to Liverpool then a big money move for Sergio Aguero to Manchester City and the more recent Radamel Falcao. They have been loosing their star player to big clubs but they still make do with the financial profits they make from selling their star players.

Barcelona and Real Madrid are very rich teams who cherry pick up players from not only the rest of the Spanish league but also the rest of the world. Barcelona signed the new brazilian wonder kid Neymar for more than 50 million pounds. Where as Real Madrids big signing was Gareth Bale for the price of 100 million euros the worlds most expensive player ever. Both teams also had new managers with Tata Martino not so big name manager to manage the catalan giants and Real Madrid appointing the experienced Carlo Ancelloti.

Both new managers did have a lot of money to spend and they did spend to buy a number of players. This would surely have made either of the two teams to win the league title. But Athletico Madrid with their team play they managed to get results on regurlar basis to keep in touch with the two top teams. Barcelona did look like a team out of contention early at the later stages of the season. But it was Real Madrid who were the ones to go out of the title race first as they concentrated more on the Champions League.
